How does an Extended Test Drive work in India?

In India, an Extended Test Drive runs through self-drive rental platforms — primarily Zymo, which aggregates rental partners across 60+ cities. You book the exact model you are considering buying, pick it up from a partner location, drive it on your real routes for one to seven days, and return it. Same mechanics as a self-drive rental. You still purchase the car through your OEM dealer.

The full booking flow on Zymo

  1. Search. Open the Buy Car section on zymo.app or the Zymo app. Enter the model you are considering — Creta, Nexon, Seltos, XUV700, whichever is in your shortlist.
  2. Try and Decide. Tap the Try and Decide button on the model page. The flow switches to Extended Test Drive search.
  3. Choose city, location, dates, duration. Pick your pickup city, a location near you, your start date and time, and the duration (one full day minimum).
  4. Compare cars. Available cars from multiple Zymo partners appear with transparent partner-by-partner pricing. Same model, different partners — pick the option that fits your needs.
  5. Verify and pay. Complete Aadhaar OTP verification (via WhatsApp or email link), pay online by card, UPI, or net banking.
  6. Pick up the car. Reach the partner location at your start time. Carry your driving licence original. The partner does a handover inspection — you photograph the car for your records.
  7. Drive your life. Take it on your commute. Park it in your society. Take it to a weekend trip. Use it the way you would use it if you owned it.
  8. Return. Drop the car back at the partner location on time, refuelled to the level the partner specified. Security deposit refunds in 5-7 working days.

Where the cars come from

Zymo does not own any vehicles. Cars come from rental partners — independent operators across 60+ Indian cities who run self-drive rental businesses. For an Extended Test Drive, you book the same model from the same partner inventory used for travel rentals. The partner does not know whether your trip intent is travel or evaluation — the booking process is identical.

What you do not need to do

  • You do not need to show proof you are planning to buy the car.
  • You do not need a loan pre-approval or dealer paperwork.
  • You do not interact with the OEM dealer for the Extended Test Drive — that comes later, for the purchase.

What if the exact model is unavailable?

Pick the closest car in the same segment. For example, if a Hyundai Creta is not available in your city for your dates, a Kia Seltos or Tata Nexon may be — same compact-SUV segment. Same-segment substitution still informs the buying decision well; the segment-level decision (compact SUV vs sedan vs hatchback) is usually clearer than the within-segment decision.
