Do self-drive rental cars in India have FASTag?
Updated May 2026 · Based on partner policies across the Zymo network
Yes. All highway-going self-drive partner cars on Zymo are equipped with a working FASTag. Toll charges incurred during your rental are billed to you separately at the end of the trip, typically by deducting the actual toll cost from the security deposit or charging it to your card. The FASTag itself is registered to the partner; you only pay the toll amount, not a per-trip activation fee.
How toll billing works on a rental
Partners use one of two methods. Method 1: a separate toll-tracking system reads your trip's toll usage and charges you the total at the end. Method 2: the partner reads the FASTag balance pre-trip and post-trip, and the difference is what you owe. Either way, you pay only the actual toll amount — no markup for using the partner's FASTag account.
Why your own FASTag won't work
Highway FASTags are linked to the vehicle's registration number, not the driver. Your personal FASTag (registered to your own car) cannot be used on a rental car — toll plazas read the windshield-mounted tag's RFID, not your phone. You don't need to bring a FASTag for a rental; the car comes with one.
Toll math example
Mumbai-Goa one-way via NH66 = ₹640 total tolls (Mumbai-Pune Expressway ₹320, Khed ₹85, Kolhapur ₹120, Goa Border ₹115). Delhi-Agra via Yamuna Expressway = ₹405 one-way. Bangalore-Mysore Expressway = ₹275 one-way. These are billed back to you after the trip ends.
Related questions
- Do I need to bring my own FASTag?
- No. The rental car comes with a working FASTag attached to the windshield. Your personal FASTag (linked to your own car) cannot be used on a rental — toll plazas read the windshield tag's vehicle registration, not the driver.
- How are toll charges billed?
- Two common methods: (1) partner reads FASTag balance pre-trip and post-trip and charges you the difference, or (2) a separate toll-tracking system reads your trip's tolls and charges the total at return. Either way, you pay only the actual toll amount.
- What if the FASTag doesn't work at a toll?
- Pay cash at the booth and keep the receipt. Inform the partner at return — they will reconcile the cash toll against the FASTag log. Some partners reimburse cash tolls if the FASTag was at fault.
- Are tolls included in the daily rate?
- No. Tolls are passed through to you at the exact amount you accrue during the trip. The daily booking covers the car only; tolls, fuel, and parking are separate.
- How much do tolls cost on typical Indian routes?
- Mumbai-Goa one-way = ₹640. Delhi-Agra (Yamuna Expressway) = ₹405 one-way. Bangalore-Mysore Expressway = ₹275 one-way. Delhi-Jaipur (NH48) = ₹220 one-way. Most highways accept FASTag for cashless payment.
