Compact SUVs — family outstation and hill stations
The Creta AT, Nexon AMT, and Brezza AT cover the vast majority of family outstation trips — weekend breaks to Coorg, Ooty, Munnar, Mahabaleshwar, or Kasol. Ground clearance is adequate for paved hill roads and mild village kutcha roads. Automatic transmission makes mountain driving less fatiguing. Check the listing for the age requirement.
Full-size SUVs — Ladakh, Spiti, and rough terrain
For Ladakh, Spiti, Zanskar, or Arunachal Pradesh, the Fortuner (221mm, 4x4, diesel) and Thar (226mm, 4WD off-road specialist) are the practical choices. The XUV700 with 4WD is a strong highway option with ADAS features, but its 200mm clearance is not rated for sustained off-road use the way the Fortuner and Thar are. Note that full-size SUVs may need a higher minimum age — check the listing.
